Innovative Parking Surface Coming to UCF
TemPark saves the day–and the turf–at soggy Bay Hill Invitational

East Orlando Sun (April, 2005) – When the rains fell on opening day of the 2005 Bay Hill Invitational last month, fans were saved from walking and driving through muddy and waterlogged entrances by the use of an innovative, patented surfacing solution called TemPark, a roll out surface that is water-permeable, as well as mold-, mildew- and UV (ultraviolet)-resistant.

Developed by American Parking Solutions, a 50-year-old, Ohio-based company with regional offices in East Orlando and Fort Lauderdale, the surface is also being considered for the parking lots at the University of Central Florida.

APS, an internationally recognized company, was started by Basil Polivka, and is family owned and operated. Leslie Polivka-Adams, vice president of marketing for APS’ East Orlando office, said her brother saw a need for high-quality temporary parking surfaces, so he developed the sturdy, roll out ground cover, which has been leased to the automotive and railroad industry for over five years.

The specially manufactured polypropylene geotextile geonet composite creates a clean, strong surface while maintaining natural drainage, and does so at a cost much lower than using asphalt.

“The beauty of TemPark is there is no permitting or retention ponds necessary,” Polivka-Adams said. “You grade the surface and roll it out, stripe it and you can park on it.”

TemPark is now using the product in the special events industry for outdoor sporting events, corporate events and concerts, tents, pedestrian walkways, and any necessary dry ground cover.

APS was honored in 2004 by Industrial Fabrics Association International with an International Achievement Award of Excellence for the use of TemPark for a 57-acre parking lot that stores 9,000 new vehicles in Ontario, Canada.

The material was heat-welded, then anchor-trenched in 100-by-400 foot panels, consisting of 14 rolls. The panels were then tensioned to minimize wrinkling and finally, the lot was striped. Construction on the project took 60 days.

Bay Hill was made aware of TemPark through a recommendation made by T & B Equipment, which provides spectator stands for several professional golf tours. The use of TemPark during the rain-soaked Bay Hill Invitational proved a valuable success.

“It definitely served its purpose. TemPark saved the turf at the Bay Hill Invitational,” Polivka-Adams said.

In the past, Bay Hill used patches of an Astro Turf-type material to cover surfaces, but it did a poor job of protecting the course, and had to be destroyed after one use.

UCF will be the next major local client for TemPark, when it will be used as a temporary lot for 385 cars near the site of the new 10,000-seat convocation center and arena, located near the current UCF Arena.

The project target start date is April 18, and is scheduled to be completed in approximately 14-21 days.

Representatives of UCF’s Police, Parking and Athletic departments met with Polivka-Adams and indicated they would be interested in using TemPark for other related projects in the future.
